Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the parking facility that you provided for tenants but I do not find suitable space for my vehicle most of the time.

Firstly, I have been living in this apartment for 2 years as a tenant. There is a parking lot in the back of the building which is allowed by you to use, unfortunately I did not get enough space to park my car.

Moreover, I always noticed that the place remains busy with unknown persons' vehicles. Owing to this problem, I have to park my own vehicle in the street parking ; once I got the ticket for not parking in a designated place.

Lastly, I would like to draw your attention to this issue so that you could provide me a quick solution as soon as possible.

I look forward for your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Kiran

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact is explained, and a request for a solution is made. However, the development of these points is somewhat thin. For instance, the suggestion for a solution is vague; you ask for a 'quick solution' but do not propose specific ideas like issuing parking permits or installing a gate. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your ideas with more detail and provide a concrete suggestion, such as 'assigning numbered spots to each apartment' or 'monitoring the lot for unauthorized vehicles'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly' to transition between ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical. The connection between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is precise. For example, in the second paragraph, 'which is allowed by you to use' is a bit clunky; a more natural phrasing would improve the overall cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'dissatisfaction', 'tenant', and 'designated'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'I did not get enough space' is slightly unnatural in this context; 'I am unable to find a space' would be better. Additionally, 'unknown persons' vehicles' is a bit awkward. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise terms related to property management and parking would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For instance, 'the parking facility that you provided' should be 'that you provide' (present tense for a current situation). 'Once I got the ticket' is better phrased as 'I even received a parking ticket'. There are also minor punctuation and article errors, such as 'in the street parking' (should be 'on the street'). Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will improve your score in this criterion.
