Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the parking facility that you provided for tenants but I do not find suitable space for my vehicle most of the time.

Firstly, I have been living in this apartment for 2 years as a tenant. There is a parking lot in the back of the building which is allowed by you to use, unfortunately I did not get enough space to park my car.

Moreover, I always noticed that the place remains busy with unauthorized vehicles. Owing to this problem, I have to park my own vehicle in the street parking; once I got the ticket for not parking in a designated place.

Lastly, I would like to draw your attention to this issue so that you could provide me a quick solution as soon as possible.

I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Kiran

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter covers all three bullet points: describing the situation, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum, which impacts the overall development of ideas. While the situation is clear, the explanation of the impact—specifically the parking ticket—is a good detail, but the suggestion for a solution is quite brief and lacks specific detail (e.g., suggesting parking permits or assigned spots). To reach a higher band, you should expand on your suggestions to show more depth in your communication.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the transition between the problem and the suggested solution feels more natural rather than just a list of points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'dissatisfaction', 'unauthorized', and 'designated'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'allowed by you to use' (which sounds unnatural; 'provided for our use' would be better) and 'I did not get enough space' (which is slightly imprecise). The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range of less common or more sophisticated collocations that would push the score into the 7.0+ range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I do not find suitable space' (should be 'I cannot find'), and 'once I got the ticket' (which is a bit informal; 'I received a parking fine' is more precise). Punctuation is generally correct, but some sentence constructions are slightly awkward. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and using more precise verb tenses.
