Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the parking facility that you provide for tenants, but I do not find suitable space for my vehicle most of the time.

Firstly, I have been living in this apartment for 2 years as a tenant. There is a parking lot in the back of the building which is available for tenants, unfortunately I did not get enough space to park my car.

Moreover, I always noticed that the place remains busy with unauthorized vehicles. Owing to this problem, I have to park my own vehicle in the street parking; once I recieved the ticket for not parking in a designated place.

Lastly, I would like to draw your attention to this issue so that you could provide me a quick solution as soon as possible.

I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Kiran

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the situation, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum, which limits the development of ideas. While the situation is clear, the explanation of why it bothers you could be more detailed to fully satisfy the task requirements. The suggestion for a solution is also quite brief. To improve, you should expand on the consequences of the parking issue and provide a more specific, actionable suggestion for the landlord, such as implementing a permit system or installing a gate.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly' to transition between ideas. While these are functional, the flow is somewhat mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the progression of ideas feels more natural. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose of each section is clear to the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dissatisfaction', 'unauthorized', and 'designated'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I did not get enough space' (better: 'I am unable to find a space') and 'I always noticed' (better: 'I have consistently noticed'). The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your message clearly, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score. Expanding your repertoire of formal phrases would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I recieved the ticket' (spelling error and missing article 'a') and 'I do not find suitable space' (tense inconsistency). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to affect the overall fluency. To improve, focus on consistent verb tenses and ensure correct article usage. The punctuation is generally accurate, but pay closer attention to spelling and sentence structure to ensure greater precision.
