Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Brown,
I am writing this letter to draw your attention to ongoing parking problem in the apartment building. Although, there is parking lot behind the building for the tenants, but I often can not find the empty space when I come back from the work, especially in the evening .
I have noticed some unauthorized vehicles in that area. Owing to this problem, I have had to park my car far away from the building which is quite inconvenient for me, because it is difficult to carry heavy groceries and walk for long or in the rainy season to find a designated place in the streets.
I would like to appreciate it if you could allow numbering system to all the tenants and put a notice that unauthorized vehicles will be towed so that people could avoid using that space.
I look forward to your prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Kiran

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the parking situation, explaining the negative impact, and proposing a solution. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a landlord, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the impact of the situation to provide more depth, but you have met the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although,' 'Owing to this problem,' and 'so that.' However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between the description of the problem and the impact could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different parts of your request.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'unauthorized vehicles,' 'inconvenient,' and 'designated place.' There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'allow numbering system,' which is slightly unnatural; 'implement a numbering system' would be more precise. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and sophistication required for a higher band score. Focus on using more precise collocations to improve the naturalness of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. For instance, 'ongoing parking problem' is missing an article ('an'), and 'the empty space' is unnecessary in that context. You also have a punctuation error in the first paragraph: 'Although, there is... but I often...'—you should not use 'but' after an 'although' clause. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
