Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to complaint about the problem of parking space in the building. Although there is a parking lot available for the tenants. I often cannot find an empty space when I come back from work especially in the evening.

I often noticed that space occupied with some unauthorized vehicles. Owing to this issue, I have had to park my car on the street parking which is totally inconvenient and unsafe at the same time for me. Moreover, it is difficult to carry heavy groceries and walk for long distance.

During the rainy season, finding a designated space for parking is not possible at all.

I would appreciate it if you could assign some numbers for each tenant and restrict to unauthorized vehicles for particular schedules. I hope you will take appropriate actions to resolve this issue.

I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Kiran

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: describing the situation, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'why it bothers you' section by providing a more specific example of how this affects your daily routine, as the current explanation is a bit brief. However, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Owing to this issue', and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, the transition between the first and second paragraph could be smoother. Additionally, some sentences are slightly fragmented, such as 'Although there is a parking lot available for the tenants.' which is a dependent clause standing alone. Improving the flow between sentences would help elevate the coherence of the writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'unauthorized vehicles', 'designated space', and 'prompt response'. There are a few minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'I am writing to complaint' (should be 'complain') and 'assign some numbers' (should be 'assign specific parking spots'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations or less common lexical items would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I often noticed that space occupied with some unauthorized vehicles' (missing 'is' and 'the') and 'walk for long distance' (should be 'a long distance'). The sentence 'Although there is a parking lot available for the tenants.' is a punctuation error as it is a fragment. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will improve your accuracy.
