Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to express disappointment that I am facing often when finding the empty parking spot after returning from work. I am reside in the you apartment building which has parking are a in the backyard.
Sadly, the parking sapce is extemly small compare to the number of residence reisde in the building. Every evening when I try to park my car in parking, I find it is full. Even some visitors visiting the building use the reserved spots as there is no visitor parking and signage indicate the direction.
This is quite frustrating as I came home with exhaughtion after the heavy workload and finding no park space adversely impact my mood. Moreover, I have to park my car on the street parking which is unsafe and I have to walk for about 10 minutes from my apartment. In winter, because of the adverse weather, my car engine freeze and need to plug in the batteries in order start it which is not possible on the street parking.
I would appreciate it if you could use the empty space on front of the building for visitor parking and intall proper signages with allowance of hours. If possible, it would be great if you would provide me a permanent parking spot.
Looking forward for a positive and prompt response to resolve this issue.
Yours sincerely,
John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the situation regarding the parking shortage, explained the negative impact on your daily life, and provided a clear, actionable suggestion for the landlord. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. To improve, ensure that your ideas are fully developed; for instance, while you mentioned the difficulty of parking in winter, focusing more on the specific impact of the lack of space would strengthen the argument. Overall, the response is well-structured and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the problem from the proposed solution. There is a clear progression of ideas throughout the text. However, some cohesive devices are slightly mechanical or misused, such as 'Even some visitors visiting the building' and 'signage indicate the direction'. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in light of this') would improve the flow and help the reader follow your argument more smoothly. Overall, the structure is sound and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'adversely impact', 'exhaughtion' (spelling error), and 'permanent parking spot'. However, there are several spelling errors ('sapce', 'extemly', 'reside', 'intall', 'signages') and some awkward collocations like 'I am reside' and 'parking are a'. These errors occasionally distract the reader, though they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on improving spelling accuracy and using more precise collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated synonyms for common words will also help elevate your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms ('I am reside', 'I am writing to express disappointment that I am facing') and subject-verb agreement ('signage indicate'). Some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'I came home with exhaughtion'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tenses and basic sentence construction. Proofreading for common errors like missing articles or incorrect verb endings will significantly improve your accuracy.
