Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to express disappointment that I am facing frequently when finding an empty parking spot after returning from work. I reside in the your apartment building which has parking are a in the backyard.
Sadly, the alloted parking sapce for the building is extemly small compare to the number of residence living here. Every evening, when I try to park my car in parking, I find it is full. Even some visitors visiting the building use the reserved spots as there is no visitor parking and signage indicate "residential parking only".
This is quite frustrating as I came home with exsaution exhaustion after the heavy workload and finding no park space adversely impact my mood. Moreover, I have to park my car on the street parking which is unsafe and I have to walk for about 10 minutes from my apartment. In winter, because of the adverse weather, my car engine freeze and need to plug in the batteries in order start it which is not possible on the street parking.
I would appreciate it if you could use the empty space on front of the building for visitor parking and intall proper signage with allowance of hours. Also, it would be greatful if you would provide me a permanent parking spot.
Looking forward to a positive and prompt response to resolve this issue.
Yours sincerely,
John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the parking situation, explain the negative impact on your daily life (exhaustion and safety concerns), and provide a logical suggestion for the landlord. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully developed without minor inconsistencies; for example, you mention the backyard parking area but then suggest using the front of the building, which is a good, specific solution. The response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Also' to link your ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor mechanical errors in phrasing. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the problem to the impact and finally to the proposed solution. To improve, try to vary your linking words further and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'this issue') is used consistently to maintain a smooth flow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'adversely', 'allotted', and 'reside'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'sapce', 'extemly', 'intall', and 'greatful', which detract from the overall quality. Additionally, some word choices are slightly awkward, such as 'I am writing to express disappointment that I am facing frequently'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a wider command of natural collocations to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if you could use...' and the causal 'because of the adverse weather...'. There are several grammatical slips, including subject-verb agreement issues ('engine freeze' instead of 'engines freeze') and article usage errors ('in parking' instead of 'in the parking lot'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these are frequent areas where accuracy can be tightened.
