Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to express disappointment that I am facing frequently when finding an empty parking spot after returning from work. I reside in the your apartment building which has are a in the backyard.
Sadly, the alocated parking sapce for the building is extremely small compared to the number of residence living here. Every evening, when I try to park my car in parking, I find it is full. Even some visitors visiting the building use the reserved spots for parking as there is no visitor parking and signage indicate "residential parking only".
This is quite frustrating as I came home with exhaustion after the heavy workload and finding no park space adversely impact my mood. Moreover, I have to park my car on the street parking which is unsafe and I have to walk for about 10 minutes from my apartment. In winter, because of the adverse weather, my car engine freezes as it needed to be plugged in the batteries in order start it which is not possible on the street parking.
I would appreciate it if you could use the empty space on front of the building for visitor parking and intall proper signage with allowance of hours. Also, it would be greatful if you would provide me a permanent parking spot.
Looking forward to a positive and prompt response to resolve this issue.
Yours sincerely,
John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact is explained, and a solution is proposed. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, particularly the explanation of why the lack of parking is problematic, such as the safety concerns and the technical issues with the car engine in winter. The response is fully focused on the task requirements, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem, the impact, and the proposed solutions. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Also', and 'Sadly' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the description of the problem to its consequences and finally to the suggested actions, which makes the letter easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, though there are some inaccuracies in word choice and spelling. For instance, 'alocated' (allocated), 'sapce' (space), and 'residence' (residents) are spelling errors. Phrases like 'I came home with exhaustion' and 'it would be greatful' are slightly unnatural. While the student attempts to use more specific vocabulary like 'adverse weather' and 'signage', the errors in word formation and collocation prevent a higher score. The range is sufficient to convey the message clearly despite these slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I reside in the your apartment building which has are a in the backyard' (incorrect article and verb usage) and 'as it needed to be plugged' (tense inconsistency). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor issues with sentence construction. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall meaning of the letter. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tenses.
