Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear James,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding finding difficulties in vacant parking space after coming from work.

I have two parking spaces allotted to me under rental agreement one is for four wheeler and another one for two wheeler. I mostly use two wheeler for my commute to work. After coming from work since last 3 weeks I am not getting empty space to park my bike after coming from work, it is really a frustrating experience for me. Every time, I tried to park my bike at designated spot and I find out that other resident has already parked there.

I want you to talk about this matter to management and want you to resolve this matter as soon as possible. I have tried contacting management but, they want landlord to be present while complaining so please have look into this matter.

I am looking forward this inconvenience to resolved and hope to hear a positive response from side.

Yours faithfully,

Peter Parker.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the parking situation, explaining the frustration, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development is somewhat repetitive, particularly the mention of 'coming from work' which appears three times in the first two paragraphs. To reach a higher band, the ideas could be expanded with more specific detail about the impact of the parking issue on your daily routine, rather than repeating the same information. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening, body, and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the situation from the request for action. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and repetitive. For example, the phrase 'after coming from work' is used as a mechanical link multiple times. The transition between the description of the problem and the request for the landlord's intervention could be smoother. Using a wider variety of linking words or phrases, such as 'consequently' or 'furthermore', would improve the flow and help the ideas connect more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but it lacks variety and precision. Phrases like 'finding difficulties in vacant parking space' and 'not getting empty space' are functional but slightly unnatural. The term 'four wheeler' and 'two wheeler' are common in some regions but less standard in international English; 'car' and 'motorcycle' or 'bike' would be more appropriate. There is a reliance on simple vocabulary, and some collocations are slightly off, such as 'have look into this matter' (missing an article). Expanding your range to include more precise descriptive language would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that, while not impeding communication, are noticeable. For instance, 'I am looking forward this inconvenience to resolved' contains errors in verb form and preposition usage (should be 'looking forward to this inconvenience being resolved'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors, such as 'talk about this matter to management' (should be 'with the management') and 'from side' (should be 'from your side'). Increasing the accuracy of these structures and ensuring correct preposition usage will help improve your score.
