Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope you're doing well! I have been writing this letter to express my strong disagreement with you due to unable to getting parking space.

My apartment is located in the first block where plenty of parking spaces is available. But whenever I'm coming from work I found other blocks car parked. The number of vehicles are not one or two there are majority of second block vehicles are parked in abrupt manner which blocking the road and left no space for others. Since I'm part of this society from long time but still following the discipline. I thought either discussing the matter verbally to societal members better to report the matter to legal team.

As a landlord its your major responsibility to fix the issue while taking stringent actions against them. The problem is not only uncontrolled parking but also unfollowing society's rules and regulation.

I hope you will find the solution as quickly.

Your Sincerely,

Vikas, Society Member

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points: describing the situation, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. However, the tone is overly aggressive and accusatory, which is inappropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. Phrases like 'express my strong disagreement with you' and 'major responsibility to fix the issue' sound confrontational rather than professional. To improve, focus on a more polite, collaborative tone. While the ideas are relevant, the development is somewhat limited by the informal and slightly aggressive language, which detracts from the professional nature of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, and the progression of ideas is clear. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Since' and 'But', to link ideas. However, the transitions between sentences are sometimes abrupt, and the paragraphing is not fully utilized to separate the distinct points of the letter. The use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'the number of vehicles are not one or two', which lacks a clear connection to the previous sentence. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and formal register required for a letter to a landlord. There are several awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'abrupt manner' (likely meaning 'haphazardly') and 'societal members' (which sounds like a sociological term rather than 'residents' or 'tenants'). Additionally, 'unfollowing' is not standard English. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more precise vocabulary related to housing and parking, and ensure your word choices are appropriate for a formal context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the letter that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'I have been writing this letter to express' (should be 'I am writing'), 'due to unable to getting' (should be 'due to being unable to find'), and 'whenever I'm coming from work I found' (tense inconsistency). Subject-verb agreement is also an issue, such as 'the number of vehicles are' (should be 'is'). While you attempt some complex structures, they are often faulty. You need to focus on basic tense consistency and correct prepositional usage to improve your accuracy.
