Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear David,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I am writing this to you regarding my parking space , As you are aware that i live in your apartment for past 3 years and I always paid my rent on time but during the last 3 days I have been facing to find a parking space when I come home from work after finishing my night duty.

My rent is 1500$ and i pay 250$ for my parking space as per this kind of rate I have all the rights to accommodate with all kind of amenities but due to stranger i can not find parking space at my spot because of that i have to park my car on the streets which is really scary for me, I am afraid that someone can stole or hit the car then I have to face many difficulties.

I really do not know who parks their car on my space , It really makes my work huge in the morning because when i come house early in the morning after late night shift my mind only concentrate to sleep but due to full of parking , I apparently can not find the space which makes me anxious.

I am requesting you to solve this problem as fast as you can.

Yours sincerely,

Rob

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: describing the situation, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. Your tone is appropriate for a letter to a landlord, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the frustration of finding a parking space. To improve, ensure that each paragraph adds new information rather than restating the same problem. For example, instead of repeating the difficulty of parking, you could have provided a more concrete suggestion for the landlord, such as installing a gate or issuing parking permits to residents.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use basic cohesive devices like 'however' or 'because of that' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing and run-on sentences, such as in the second paragraph where multiple ideas are joined by commas rather than full stops. The use of referencing is sometimes unclear, for instance, 'due to stranger' is grammatically confusing and disrupts the cohesion of the sentence. Using more varied transition words would help improve the overall logical progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message effectively, including terms like 'amenities', 'night duty', and 'anxious'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'facing to find a parking space' (should be 'struggling to find') and 'someone can stole' (should be 'someone could steal'). The phrase 'due to stranger' is also unnatural. While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, you need to focus on using more accurate collocations and ensuring that your word choices are grammatically correct in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the letter. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('someone can stole'), incorrect verb tenses ('I always paid' should be 'I have always paid'), and punctuation errors, particularly the overuse of commas to join independent clauses. There are also issues with articles and prepositions, such as 'due to full of parking'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to lower the score. Focusing on sentence boundaries and basic tense consistency will significantly improve your accuracy.
