IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You live in a small apartment building with a parking lot in back, and you often cannot find an empty parking space when you get home from work.

Write a letter to your landlord. In your letter
• describe the situation.
• explain why it bothers you.
• suggest something the landlord could do to solve the problem.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ____

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear John,

I hope you are doing well. I would like to bring to your notice that parking space in the back has no open slot to park my car at night. As I have an afternoon shift, I return from work at midnight.

It is nearly impossible to fin a parking spot at this hour near the apartment building as well. We have dedicated spaces to park our cars, however, someone always parks their car in my spot. It is a frequent concern, as there is some one else parking in my spot without my permission.

I would like to recommend a reminder to be sent to all residents regarding allocated parking spaces. It should include a community meeting to remind everyone about their designated parking spot and a fine be added to those who violate this. Moreover, this will also help us identify those who have previously been parking in other member's parking spaces as well.

Thanking you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from your soon.

Kind regards,

Shahrukh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the parking situation, explain the frustration caused by the lack of access to your designated spot, and provide a constructive suggestion for the landlord. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands the problem and the desired solution. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are fully consistent; for instance, you mention that there are no open slots, but then specify that your spot is being taken by others, which is a slight contradiction in the narrative flow.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem description from the proposed solution. You use some cohesive devices such as 'however', 'moreover', and 'as', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the connection between the lack of parking and the specific issue of unauthorized use could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be improved by better linking the impact of the problem to the proposed solution.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'designated parking spot', 'violate', and 'consideration'. There are a few minor errors, such as 'fin' instead of 'find' and 'some one' written as two words. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would characterize a higher band. The word choice is functional and appropriate for a formal letter, but expanding your range of collocations would enhance the overall quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'As I have an afternoon shift, I return from work at midnight.' While most sentences are clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'parking space in the back has no open slot' (should be 'the parking space') and 'hearing from your soon' (should be 'you'). Punctuation is generally accurate, but the occasional error in article usage and preposition choice persists. The grammar is sufficient to communicate your message without difficulty, but more consistent control over complex structures is needed for a higher score.
