Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Singh,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to discuss about a problem I am facing to find an empty car parking space.
When I come back from work in the evening, I usually could not find any empty parking spaces available for my car. It wastes my time to find one. Most often, I have to park my car in the paid parking lot. It wastes my money as well.
When I come back from work after a long day, I have very limited time and energy for my daily errands. When I could not find any empty space for parking my car I feel upset, as that time could be utilized to do other household chores.
Kindly talk to the community members to provide us more parking spots. Or you could either reduce the number of tenants in the house who have a car. I hope you would take necessary action.
Regards,
Iqbal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points: describing the situation, explaining the impact, and suggesting solutions. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the mention of 'wasting time' and 'wasting money' could be more concisely integrated. The suggestions provided are relevant, though the second suggestion regarding reducing the number of tenants is perhaps less practical than the first. Overall, the task is fulfilled clearly and effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'When I come back' and 'Or you could', though the range of these devices is somewhat limited. The transition between the problem description and the proposed solutions is smooth. While the structure is sound, the use of linking words is a bit basic, which prevents it from reaching a higher band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. There is some repetition of simple phrases like 'empty parking spaces' and 'wastes my time'. While the student uses functional language, there is a lack of less common or more precise vocabulary that would demonstrate a wider range. Collocations are generally accurate, though 'discuss about' is a common error (the correct form is 'discuss a problem'). The language is sufficient but lacks sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I usually could not find' (should be 'cannot find' or 'am unable to find') and 'discuss about'. The tense usage is generally consistent, but there are minor slips in verb forms and preposition usage. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the reader can easily understand the situation and the request. The control of grammar is sufficient for a Band 6.
