Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Building Manager,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to draw your attention towards the issue of parking space in our parking lot.

To begin with, yesterday evening I came back from work and there was no space available for parking my car; causing inconvenience and fatigue after a long day. Consequently, I had to park my car in the street parking and had to pay almost 50$ per night. In addition to it, as per the lease agreement , I am already paying on top of my rent for allotted parking.

I would really appreciate if you could provide notice to all the tenants regarding the policy of their own parking spaces which will help to reduce difficulties in this matter. Moreover, I would like to request the reimbursement of $50 of extra parking cost as I have attached the receipt for reference.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Looking forward to hear from you soon.

Yours Faithfully,

Parneet kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the parking situation, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, providing sufficient detail to convey the frustration caused by the lack of parking. The request for reimbursement is a logical extension of the problem. The response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem from the proposed solution. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Consequently', 'In addition to it', and 'Moreover' are used to guide the reader through the argument. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. The letter maintains a consistent formal tone throughout, and the referencing is clear.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the context of a formal complaint. Phrases like 'draw your attention towards', 'allotted parking', and 'reimbursement' demonstrate a good level of control. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. While the range is adequate for the task, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated vocabulary to reach the highest band levels.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The letter displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, though there are minor slips, such as 'Looking forward to hear from you' (should be 'hearing') and the slightly awkward phrasing 'policy of their own parking spaces'. Punctuation is generally accurate, although the use of a semicolon after 'car' in the second paragraph is slightly misused. These errors are non-systematic and do not interfere with the clarity of the message.
