Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Henry,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you of the challenges I have been facing regarding parking space. The have significantly affected me negatively, because often time after a long day from work, I have to park in a far distance and even worse is parking on the road side which is affecting my sense of safety and in greatly affecting my comfort.

I suggest that you should provide us with a parking tag , and also remove the abandoned cars that have been there for years to create enough space for the tenants.

A security personnel should be employed to enhance the proper orderliness.

In conclusion, I would appreciate if visiting guests are asked to park somewhere else, since the parking space is for us.

I look forward to hearing from you and will really appreciate you coperation.

Yours faithfully

Agubo Stanley.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the situation, explaining the impact, and suggesting solutions. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum, which impacts the development of ideas. While the suggestions are relevant, they are presented in a somewhat list-like fashion without sufficient elaboration. To reach a higher band, you should expand on why these solutions would be effective or provide more detail about the current parking difficulties. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a landlord, but the brevity prevents a fully developed response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into short paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited. Transitions between sentences are often missing or repetitive, such as the reliance on simple sentence structures. The flow is somewhat disjointed, particularly in the transition between the problem description and the suggested solutions. Improving the use of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in addition to this') would help create a smoother progression of ideas throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. Phrases like 'challenges I have been facing' and 'affected me negatively' are functional but basic. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'park in a far distance' (should be 'park a long distance away') and 'proper orderliness'. To improve, try to incorporate more specific vocabulary related to property management and parking issues to demonstrate a wider range of lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical errors that hinder fluency. For example, 'The have significantly affected me' contains a subject-verb agreement error, and 'often time' should be 'often'. There are also punctuation issues, such as the spacing before commas and the incorrect use of 'coperation' (spelling). While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these minor errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and spelling.
