IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You live in a small apartment building with a parking lot in back, and you often cannot find an empty parking space when you get home from work.

Write a letter to your landlord. In your letter
• describe the situation.
• explain why it bothers you.
• suggest something the landlord could do to solve the problem.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ____

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr. Smith,

I am writing this to bring your attention to the parking issue I have been facing for last couple of months. Whenever I come back from work, I rarely find an empty parking spot in the parking lot assigned to the tenants of your building. It appears that many of these parking spots are being used by the visitors inappropriately.

I am really exasperated because I have to regularly park my car on the street due to unavailability of the parking spot. Later at night when visitors leave, I have to go out again to park it in the lot, otherwise, the city officials could fine me.

I would suggest you to put up signs for visitors, not to park theirs cars in the lot assigned for the tenants cars, and if they do their vehicle may get towed at their own expense. I am sure this simple measure would refrain the visitors from using the tenant parking lot.

I am sure you would take a prompt action to address this situation.

Kind Regards,

Rashpal Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the parking situation, explain the personal frustration caused by the lack of space, and provide a practical suggestion for the landlord. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements, demonstrating a clear understanding of the communicative goal.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the problem description to the impact and finally the proposed solution. Cohesive devices such as 'Whenever', 'Later at night', and 'if they do' are used effectively to link ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of the letter is smooth and easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'bring your attention to', 'inappropriately', and 'exasperated' are well-chosen and fit the formal context. There are minor issues with word choice, such as 'take a prompt action' (should be 'take prompt action') and 'refrain the visitors' (should be 'deter the visitors'). However, these do not impede communication and the overall vocabulary is adequate for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'for last couple of months' (missing 'the'), 'park theirs cars' (should be 'their'), and 'assigned for the tenants cars' (missing possessive apostrophe). Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over grammar and punctuation is generally strong enough to ensure the message is conveyed without confusion.
