Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Ben,

I hope you are doing well. The purpose of writing this letter is to inform you that, I usually come home from work at midnight because of that I find it very challenging to find a vacant spot to park my car every night.

Furthermore, I recently had a major knee replacement surgery which make it difficult for me to park my car far from the spot as I have to walk extra steps which is very painful sometimes. It is really frustrating for me because I pay extra for the premium parking and I cannot even use it.

I would like to suggest that, you should assign a specific parking slots to everyone living in the apartment. In addition to that, you should make a guest parking Infront of the building which help you to reduce the traffic in the parking lot.

Please look forward to it.

Thank You

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact is explained, and a solution is proposed. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestion to create guest parking in front of the building is a bit vague and could have been expanded to explain how this would specifically help the current residents. The letter meets the requirements of the prompt, but the depth of the explanation regarding the 'premium parking' could be more persuasive to ensure the landlord understands the urgency of the situation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of the argument. The use of cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'In addition to that' is helpful, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, although the sentence structure in the first paragraph ('because of that I find') is slightly awkward, which disrupts the flow of the opening. Overall, the letter is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem from the proposed solution.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some good collocations such as 'challenging to find' and 'vacant spot'. However, there are minor errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'make a guest parking' instead of 'create guest parking' or 'designate a guest parking area'. The range is sufficient for the task, but it lacks the more sophisticated or precise vocabulary that would elevate the response to a higher band. The language is functional but not particularly varied.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'make it difficult' (should be 'makes'), 'assign a specific parking slots' (should be 'assign specific parking slots'), and 'which help you to reduce' (should be 'which would help to reduce'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence structure in the first paragraph is run-on and lacks proper subordination.
