Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Susan,
I am writing to you in regards to parking problem I am having at house. I have to work till late night in office and when I get back to home I often cannot find my parking space empty, someone from the building is using it when I am not around and eventually I have to park my car somewhere far away from house.
As a result I have to park my car in other's parking space or on sidewalk which can lead to towing of my car. Also, I am being disturbed by all the honking done by them while they go to their work in early morning. It would be great pleasure if you could come and talk to the building secretary regarding this issue and then secretary can pass on message to responsible person for this cause.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Ayush.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing the parking situation, explaining why it is problematic, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the difficulty of finding a space, you could have provided more specific details about how often this occurs or the impact on your daily routine to better flesh out the response. The suggestion to involve the building secretary is clear, but the letter could be improved by adding a more formal closing statement regarding your expectations for a resolution.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the problem to its consequences and finally to a proposed solution. Paragraphing is used to separate the main issues, which helps the reader follow your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Phrases like 'As a result' and 'Also' are used correctly, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. Some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'responsible person for this cause,' which sounds a bit unnatural. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary to communicate your message effectively. You use relevant terms such as 'towing,' 'parking space,' and 'consideration.' However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation. For example, 'parking problem I am having at house' should be 'at my building' or 'at home,' and 'it would be great pleasure' is not a standard idiomatic expression in this context. To reach a higher band, try to use more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary is sufficient for the task but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Common issues include missing articles (e.g., 'at house' instead of 'at my house' or 'at the building') and preposition errors. There are also some awkward phrasings, such as 'honking done by them while they go to their work.' While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading, particularly regarding article usage and sentence construction. Increasing the variety of complex sentence forms would also help improve your score.
