Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to express my dissatisfaction with the parking space in my apartment. Kindly allow me to elaborate on this situation.
At the outset, I have been living in this apartment for the last two weeks, and I have been facing this problem due to the large volume of cars parked in the building. I am unable to find empty space in this building when I come back home from work. Furthermore, this situation gives me extra stress after work due to limited parking space. Also, I received a parking ticket last week, which caused inconvenience for me.
Additionally, I would appreciate it if you could expand the parking space and allot separate parking for everyone so that residents can park their vehicles in a designated place. Apart from this, I am willing to pay extra parking fees if required.
I hope you will look into this matter at your earliest convenience. I would be grateful if you could solve these issues as soon as possible. I am eagerly waiting for a prompt response from your side.
Yours sincerely, Ramanpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the parking situation, explain the negative impact (stress and a parking ticket), and provide a constructive suggestion for the landlord. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader fully understands the nature of the problem and the desired outcome. The response is focused and maintains a consistent purpose throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the description of the problem from the proposed solutions. You use cohesive devices such as 'At the outset', 'Furthermore', 'Additionally', and 'Apart from this' to guide the reader through your arguments. While some transitions are slightly mechanical, the overall flow is smooth and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. The letter maintains a professional and coherent structure from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'express my dissatisfaction', 'at your earliest convenience', and 'allot separate parking' are appropriate for a formal context. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choice is generally accurate. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common vocabulary related to housing or management issues, such as 'inadequate facilities' or 'mitigate the issue'. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and professionally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The letter displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and punctuation is handled well. There are no major errors that impede communication. You use a variety of structures, such as 'I would be grateful if you could...' and 'I am willing to pay...', which show a good command of formal English. While there is room for more complex grammatical structures to demonstrate greater flexibility, the current level is solid and error-free for the most part.
