Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

I am writing to express my concern about the parking issue I am currently facing. Although I do not have any problem with neighbourhood I have, still the parking issue being huge issue because of I work midnight which make hard for me to find a parking place for my car at midnight.

For last few weeks I noticed that whenever I came from my work and try to find a parking spot I always failed and at last I decide to do paid street parking. As I am working 2 jobs I do not want to waste time to find spot for parking because i have to wake up early mornings.

Hence, I request you to please provide equal space for parking to every apartment so that no one have to face this problem.

I am hoping to hear from you on this issue.

Thank you

Your sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact is explained, and a solution is proposed. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestion to 'provide equal space' is vague and lacks detail on how this would be implemented in a practical sense. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord, though the opening 'Dear sir' is generic. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the consequences of the parking issue and provide more specific, actionable suggestions for the landlord to consider.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Phrases like 'For last few weeks' and 'Hence' are used to transition, but the flow between sentences is occasionally choppy. There is a lack of variety in linking words, and some sentences feel disconnected. To improve, try using a wider range of cohesive devices such as 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in addition' to better connect your ideas and improve the overall flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. You rely on simple phrases like 'parking issue' and 'find a parking place' repeatedly. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'I do not have any problem with neighbourhood I have', which sounds unnatural. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to use more precise vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'allocated parking', 'inconvenience', or 'designated spaces'. Expanding your range of collocations will help you express your points with greater clarity and sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Examples include 'the parking issue being huge issue because of I work midnight' and 'whenever I came from my work'. These errors involve incorrect verb tenses, missing articles, and awkward phrasing. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these slips prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed accurately.
