Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs. Paula,

I am writing this letter to inform you that i am facing a problem from last two weeks that when i came back from my work i am not able to find a parking space for my car .

The parking area is always full. When i tried to park my car i am not able to find a good and secured space to park it. However, some people from our building park car in a wrong direction which covered space of atleast two car which bothered a lot.

I came late night from my work and it bothers me alot everyday because it wastes my too much time to find a space to park a car.

I just want to give a suggestion to you that please have a look tomorrow in a parking area and make some changes in an infrastructure so that there is more space and inform other people as well who are not using parking area in an appropriate way.

I am looking forward to hearing your response as soon as possible.

Yours Faithfully,

Mehak Bhardwaj.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the parking situation, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the suggestion to 'make some changes in an infrastructure' is vague and lacks specific detail, which would have strengthened the response. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the reader is left in no doubt about the nature of the complaint. To reach a higher band, you should provide more concrete details regarding the proposed solutions, such as painting lines or assigning specific spots.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. There is a clear progression of ideas from the problem to the impact and finally the solution. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Phrases like 'However' and 'I just want to' are used, but the transitions between sentences could be smoother. The paragraphing is functional, though the letter is quite short, which makes the structure feel a bit basic. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'facing a problem', 'parking area is always full', and 'bothers me a lot'. While these are understandable, they do not demonstrate a wide range of vocabulary. There are also some minor collocation issues, such as 'in a wrong direction' instead of 'incorrectly' or 'in the wrong way'. To improve, try to incorporate more specific vocabulary related to parking and property management, such as 'designated spaces', 'inconsiderate parking', or 'implementing a permit system'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the letter, particularly with verb tenses and articles. For example, 'I am facing a problem from last two weeks' should be 'I have been facing a problem for the last two weeks'. Additionally, there are issues with article usage, such as 'in a parking area' instead of 'in the parking area', and 'in an infrastructure' which is grammatically incorrect. While the meaning is generally clear, these errors are persistent. You should focus on mastering present perfect continuous tenses and the correct use of definite and indefinite articles to improve your accuracy.
