Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Tish,
I hope this letter finds you in well, I am writing to draw your attention towards parking issue. Finding an empty parking space has become a challenge from the past couple of days. I often find the parking spaces are filled when get home from work. Therefore, I have to park my car on the street which is not a suitable place may leads to parking fine. I have to drive around continuously unless I find a spot to park in apartment premises and leaves me frustrated.
My suggestion is to talk to authorities to make sure the unauthorized vehicles should not be parked in the premises. In this way apartment to parking ratio will be maintained. For example, parking spaces could be provided with apartment number so that everyone can understand and go to the designated spaces. Consequently, everyone will be able to park at their reserved spots.
I hope you will take a prompt action on this.
Best regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact is explained, and a solution is proposed. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why it bothers you is brief, and the suggestion regarding parking permits could be more detailed to show a clearer understanding of the logistics. While the task is fully addressed, the ideas could be expanded slightly to provide a more persuasive and comprehensive argument. Overall, the response is relevant and meets the requirements of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs. There is a logical progression from the problem to the impact and finally to the proposed solution. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'For example', and 'Consequently' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences in the first paragraph could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the situation.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some attempts at using topic-specific vocabulary like 'unauthorized vehicles', 'apartment premises', and 'designated spaces'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'in well' (should be 'well') and 'may leads to' (should be 'may lead to'). The range is sufficient to communicate the situation, but it lacks the sophistication or precision that would characterize a higher band score. More varied vocabulary would enhance the professional tone of the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include 'from the past couple of days' (should be 'for the past'), 'unless I find a spot' (should be 'until'), and 'take a prompt action' (should be 'take prompt action'). There are also minor issues with article usage and verb forms. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. A greater focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and preposition usage would be beneficial.
