Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to inform you about the problem that I am facing everyday at the parking lot. After coming back from the office, I hardly find any an empty space to park my car.
I work from office on weekdays and the timings are 9 am - 5 pm. I have been noticing this from the last five weeks that there is no empty parking area available after 5pm.
Due to this, I have to use the expensive street parking which is costing me a significant amount. Additionally, street parkings are not covered, I have to remove snow from my vehicle everyday which is a cumbersome task, especially when I am wearing formals.
Would you be kind enough to look into this matter? I would like to suggest that you should request the property manager a specific parking slot for my apartment. Also suggest them to allocate one space to each house owner so that no one parks at the wrong location. If they do so then administration should impose a fine on them. This will not only ensure that everyone living in this apartment gets a parking space but also stops outsiders to park in our parking lot.
Hoping for prompt action.
Yours faithfully,
Achin Pal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the parking situation, explain the negative impact (cost and inconvenience of snow removal), and propose logical solutions. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task. To reach a higher band, you could ensure that the connection between the proposed solutions and the landlord's authority is slightly more nuanced, but overall, the response is complete and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a specific purpose, moving from the problem description to the impact and finally the proposed solutions. You use cohesive devices such as 'Due to this', 'Additionally', and 'This will not only' to link your thoughts effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. The flow is smooth, and the reader can easily follow your argument from start to finish. The use of transition words is natural and contributes to the overall coherence of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context, such as 'cumbersome', 'allocate', and 'impose a fine'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'hardly find any an empty space' (a repetition error) and 'street parkings' (which should be 'street parking' as it is an uncountable noun). However, these errors do not impede communication. You successfully use topic-specific vocabulary related to parking and property management, which shows a sufficient range for the task. With more precise control over collocations, your lexical score could improve further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I hardly find any an empty space' and 'I work from office' (missing the article 'the'). Additionally, 'suggest them to allocate' is slightly awkward; 'suggest that they allocate' would be more grammatically standard. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. Your control over punctuation and sentence structure is generally good, supporting the overall clarity of your message.
