Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. John,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to inform you that I am facing difficulties with the parking lot.
My work ends at 9:30 PM and usually I reach home by 10 PM, by that time i am not able to find any empty parking lot for my car. My apartment’s dedicated parking place is occupied by my neighbour, even after I informed them not to park their vehicle there, they do not seem to care.
Without a parking bay, I am forced to park my car on side of the road which is bothering me so much. Last week a branch of a tree fell on my car while it was parked on the public space and my windshield was cracked which led to an expensive repair.
I kindly request you to arrange for a parking space nearby my apartment or inform my neighbours to avoid parking in my flat’s dedicated parking spot.
Yours sincerely,
William

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact is explained, and a solution is proposed. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, covering the parking difficulties, the personal inconvenience caused by the neighbor's actions, and the resulting damage to the vehicle. The response is well-structured and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a specific purpose, moving from the introduction of the problem to the specific consequences and finally the requested action. Cohesive devices such as 'Without a parking bay' and 'Last week' are used effectively to link ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and conveys the message clearly. There is a good use of functional language, such as 'dedicated parking place' and 'inform my neighbours'. While the range is adequate, it could be enhanced by using more sophisticated collocations or synonyms to avoid repetition of basic terms like 'parking lot' or 'car'. The word choice is generally accurate and appropriate for the formal context of the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as the comma splice in '...reach home by 10 PM, by that time i am not able...' and the capitalization error with 'i'. However, these errors do not impede communication. The control of grammar is generally good, and the punctuation is mostly correct, supporting the clarity of the message throughout the letter.
