Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr Thomas,

I am writing this letter to lodge a complaints about the inability to find a parking space for me to park when I come back from work.

This issue has been giving me concerns for days now, due to the fact that the space in the compound is not large enough to accomodate up to 10 cars and we have more tenants with their own private cars.

I do not feel comfortable with this occurrence because it does not sit well with me to have a gated compound and I can not make use of the parking lots to my content while paying an exorbitant amount for rent.

I would like to suggest if you can convert the abandoned building at the back to a parking lots, since it has not been in use since I moved into this apartment.

Thank you and I hope you consider my suggestion.

Yours Faithfully,

ogunlana tola.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the parking situation, explaining why it is problematic, and proposing a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention the rent is 'exorbitant', you could have expanded slightly on the impact this has on your daily routine or stress levels to better fulfill the 'explain why it bothers you' requirement. Overall, the response is clear and relevant, meeting the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'due to the fact that', 'because', and 'since' to link your ideas. However, the transitions between sentences could be more varied to improve the flow. Paragraphing is used correctly to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider range of cohesive devices to connect your sentences more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'lodge a complaint', 'exorbitant amount', and 'accommodate' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There are a few minor errors, such as 'parking lots' (plural) when referring to a single space, and 'a complaints' (should be 'a complaint'). While the vocabulary is sufficient for the task, it lacks the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would characterize a higher band score. Focus on refining your word choice and ensuring correct singular/plural usage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that slightly distract the reader, such as 'I am writing this letter to lodge a complaints' (should be 'complaint'), 'I can not make use of the parking lots' (should be 'parking space'), and 'I would like to suggest if you can convert' (should be 'suggest that you convert'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of modal verbs and subordinate clauses.
