Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr Thomas,
I humbly request your assistance on the issue that has been occuring since I moved in your apartment. Due to the nature of my job, which requires me to return late at night. I have not been able to park my car in the parking lot and it has given me a lot of concerns, Additionally, it has been increasingly challenging as the rate of cars that is been abandon in the garage is alarming and needs to be treated as urgent as it could increase air pollution and also causes fire outbreak.
I would suggest that the parking lot should be limited to residence only, consequently there will enough space for air circulation. Furthermore, I would like to recommend the installation of CCTV for security reasons as there is an increasingly rate of insecurities which has been going on in the neighbourhood.
Thank you, I hope my request is considered and granted promptly
Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points: describing the parking situation, explaining why it is a problem, and suggesting a solution. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat inconsistent. While you mention the lack of space, the connection between abandoned cars and fire hazards is a bit of a leap and slightly distracts from the primary issue of parking availability. To improve, ensure your arguments remain focused on the core request. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord, though the structure could be more balanced to ensure each point is given equal weight.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'Furthermore' to link your points. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or misused, such as 'consequently there will enough space,' which lacks a verb. The flow between sentences is generally clear, but the overall progression could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they are used with grammatical precision will help you reach a higher band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, using terms like 'assistance,' 'increasingly challenging,' and 'installation.' However, there are some noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'rate of cars that is been abandon' (should be 'number of cars that have been abandoned') and 'rate of insecurities' (which is not a standard collocation). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more natural collocations would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'has been occuring' (spelling), 'moved in your apartment' (preposition error), 'rate of cars that is been abandon' (subject-verb agreement and passive voice error), and 'there will enough space' (missing verb). While the meaning remains clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage will be very beneficial.
