Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear mr singh,

I am writing to bring your attention towards a problem which I experienced due to limited parking space.

When i comeback from my work I am not unable to find a free sport to park my car. This becomes some unauthorized people use it but it is available only for residence although there are a number of signs mentioning that parking is prohibited for unauthorized persons, some people from outside still use it.

Moreover, I park my vehicle on the shoulder of road, resulting in I get tickets from police officers. this scenario can block the road, leading to traffic congestion.

Furthermore, I would appreciate if you could talk to the manager of the apartment building because he is one of your friends. Therefore they could take some essential steps to mitigate the issue.i will be gratefull to you to solve my problem.

I am looking forward to your positive consideration.

Your sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing the parking situation, explaining the negative impact, and suggesting a solution. Your tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention that unauthorized people use the parking lot, you could have elaborated on how this affects your daily routine or the specific nature of the 'unauthorized' vehicles. The suggestion to involve the building manager is relevant, but the explanation of why this would solve the problem is brief. To improve, try to expand on your points with more specific details to fully develop your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the problem to the consequences and finally to a proposed solution. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, the paragraphing is inconsistent and the indentation is irregular, which disrupts the visual flow of the letter. Additionally, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single clear idea and use a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'unauthorized', 'mitigate', and 'traffic congestion'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'bring your attention towards' (should be 'to'), 'free sport' (should be 'space'), and 'gratefull' (spelling error). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic structures. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure you proofread for common spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I am not unable to find' (double negative), 'some unauthorized people use it but it is available only for residence' (should be 'residents'), and 'resulting in I get tickets' (should be 'resulting in me getting tickets'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization after periods and the misuse of commas. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent sentence construction.
