Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr.Smith

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to address an issue related to a parking space. As you already aware of our available parking spaces and number of tenants living in the building.

Everyday when I reach home from work around 4pm in the evening, there is no parking space available in our building. Consequently, I have to park my car on curbside and wait to get an empty parking space. This inconvenience disturbs my sleep schedule. Moreover, yesterday I am not able to move my car from curbside and get a parking ticket of 100$, because it is prohibited to park on curbside from 2am to 6am.

I have noticed that, it is caused by shopping square which is beside our parking. There customers often park their vehicle in our parking. I would recommend you to talk with shopping mall's management and put on signs such as private parking or reserved parking in our building.

I would like to Thank you for taking my issue into consideration. I hope this will solve the parking issue.

Yours sincerely,

Rajveer Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the parking situation clearly, explained the negative impact on your daily life and finances, and provided a practical solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation of the problem is fully developed; for instance, you could have elaborated slightly more on how the lack of parking specifically affects your work-life balance or stress levels. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Consequently', 'Moreover', and 'I have noticed that' to link your ideas. However, the progression between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your transition words and ensure that the referencing is always clear. For example, in the second paragraph, the transition from the parking issue to the fine is clear, but the flow could be smoother with more sophisticated linking phrases. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points of your letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'inconvenience', 'prohibited', and 'consideration'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'shopping square' (likely 'shopping center' or 'mall') and 'put on signs' (better as 'install signs'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more specific collocations related to parking and property management, such as 'unauthorized vehicles' or 'designated parking zones', rather than relying on more general descriptive language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'As you already aware' should be 'As you are already aware', and 'yesterday I am not able' should be 'yesterday I was not able'. Additionally, 'get a parking ticket' is slightly informal; 'received a parking fine' would be more precise. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage, especially when discussing past events.
