Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to address an issue related to a parking space. As you are already aware of our available parking spaces and the number of tenants living in the building.
Every day when I reach home from work around 4pm in the evening, there is no parking space available in our building. Consequently, I have to park my car on the curbside and wait to get an empty parking space. This inconvenience disturbs my sleep schedule. Moreover, yesterday I was not able to move my car from the curbside and got a parking ticket of $100, because it is prohibited to park on the road side from 2am to 6am.
I have noticed that it is caused by the shopping centre which is beside our building's parking. Their customers often park their vehicles in our parking area. I would recommend you to address this issue with the shopping mall's management and install signs such as private parking or reserved parking in our building.
I would like to thank you for taking my issue into consideration. I hope this will solve the parking problem.
Yours sincerely,
Rajveer Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the parking situation, explain the negative impact on your daily routine and finances, and provide a practical solution involving the landlord and the neighboring business. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands the urgency of the situation. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening sentence is a complete grammatical structure rather than a fragment, as this would improve the overall professional presentation of your request.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which makes the letter easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'Consequently,' 'Moreover,' and 'I have noticed that' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve further, ensure that the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is smoother; for example, the second sentence is a fragment that slightly disrupts the flow. Overall, the structure is clear and supports the message well.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'inconvenience,' 'prohibited,' and 'consideration' appropriately. The language is natural and fits the context of a formal complaint. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To move toward a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations or less common lexical items. For instance, instead of 'reach home,' you could use 'arrive home,' and instead of 'address this issue,' you might use 'resolve this matter' to add variety and sophistication to your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and the majority of your sentences are clear and accurate. However, there are some minor grammatical slips, such as the sentence fragment 'As you are already aware of our available parking spaces and the number of tenants living in the building,' which lacks a main verb. Additionally, 'I would recommend you to address' is slightly awkward; 'I would recommend that you address' or 'I suggest that you address' would be more standard. Despite these minor issues, your control of grammar is generally good and does not impede understanding.
