Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Adam,

I'm writing to express my dissatisfaction about the parking availability in the back of the complex. As you probably now that, the number of cars has been increased significantly recently compared to the last year, however, the parking space stayed the same without any expansion to host the new cars.

Moreover, When I arrive at the building every day, I have to park my car in the supermarket parking lots, it 700 meters away from my apartment, given to the fact that I bring grocery and water with me everyday. For instance, on last Thursday, I was bearing a bag of sugar that is extremely heavy, weighing around 10 kilo grams, as result, I had a very strong back pain.

overall, I suggest that you should consider extending the parking lots to the front of the building and add at least a parking area of 600 square meters, Additionally, hiring a security Team to make sure that only authorized residents of the complex can use the parking lots.

Best regards,

Bakri

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing the situation, explaining the impact, and suggesting solutions. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the impact of the situation to provide a more persuasive argument. For example, you could mention how this affects your overall satisfaction as a tenant or your daily schedule. However, the current response covers all requirements well and maintains a clear purpose throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'For instance', and 'Additionally' to link your ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with punctuation that affect the flow, such as the missing space after the comma in 'now that, the' and the awkward phrasing in 'given to the fact that'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring correct punctuation would enhance the overall cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dissatisfaction', 'availability', and 'authorized residents'. There are some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'the number of cars has been increased' (should be 'has increased') and 'bearing a bag of sugar' (should be 'carrying'). Additionally, '10 kilo grams' should be written as '10 kilograms'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'As you probably now that' (should be 'know'), 'the parking space stayed' (should be 'has stayed'), and 'it 700 meters away' (should be 'which is 700 meters away'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage and spacing. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to limit your score in this criterion. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and relative clauses will help improve your accuracy.
