Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing regarding the issue of not getting space for parking often.

To begin with, I have noticed since last seven days. Whenever I come from work, I have to look for parking space, which is really time-consuming, and because of tired from the day, this makes me uncomfortable.

Furthermore, I am facing these circumstances due to the 2 big lorries. It is occupied places of 4 cars. Not only that, it is hard to turn my car in the morning. Because of this, I have been running late for the last few days.

Finally, I would be grateful if you could provide separate space for those big lorries or for my car so that there would be no issues related to parking and I can park my vehicle without bothering anyone.

I would really appreciate your attention to this matter look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Afroza

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact is explained, and a solution is proposed. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation of why the situation is bothersome could be more detailed to fully convey the frustration. The letter is clear and the purpose is immediately apparent, meeting the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' are used to link the paragraphs. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. For instance, the transition from the description of the lorries to the difficulty in turning the car is slightly abrupt. Overall, the structure is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. Phrases like 'not getting space' and 'big lorries' are functional but basic. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'because of tired from the day', which should be 'because I am tired after the day'. The student uses some relevant vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'time-consuming' and 'vehicle', but more sophisticated or varied synonyms would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I have noticed since last seven days' (missing 'the' and incorrect preposition usage) and 'It is occupied places of 4 cars' (incorrect passive voice construction). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions.
