IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You live in a small apartment building with a parking lot in back, and you often cannot find an empty parking space when you get home from work.

Write a letter to your landlord. In your letter
• describe the situation.
• explain why it bothers you.
• suggest something the landlord could do to solve the problem.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ____

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr.Wilson,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing this letter to complain about the parking situation in the building because I am unable to find any space to park my car every time after work.

To begin with, whenever I come back from work, my parking space is always occupied by other tenants or their visitors because of that I have to pay for the parking across the street everyday. This situation is overwhelming for me since I am paying for the parking fee in the building as well as outside which should not be happening. I have made multiple attempts to explain this situation to other tenants but they have not taken any initiative to resolve this matter.

Therefore, I would like you to reserve my parking space which I am paying for every month. In addition to that, the penalty should be charged to the residents who occupy another person's parking space.

I hope you will look into this matter and consider my suggestion. I look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,

Simran Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the parking situation, explained the negative impact on your daily life, and provided actionable suggestions for the landlord to resolve the issue. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific times or frequency of the issue to further strengthen the argument, but overall, the task is fully accomplished.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use transition signals such as 'To begin with' and 'Therefore' to guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem from the proposed solution. While the flow is generally smooth, some cohesive devices are slightly repetitive or could be more varied. For example, the connection between sentences could be improved by using a wider range of linking words to show contrast or consequence more naturally. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'taken any initiative' and 'look into this matter' are appropriate for the formal context. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances where more precise or sophisticated vocabulary could be used to enhance the quality of the writing. For instance, 'overwhelming' is used, but 'frustrating' or 'inconvenient' might be more contextually accurate. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, but the vocabulary remains largely functional rather than expressive or varied.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the grammar is generally accurate, there are a few minor slips. For example, the phrase 'because of that I have to pay' is slightly awkward; a better construction would be 'as a result, I have to pay'. Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error in the opening ('Mr.Wilson' should have a space after the period). Despite these small issues, your control of grammar is good, and the meaning is never obscured. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses or passive voice, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
