Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr Kapoor,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to complain about the unavailability of parking space in our building.

I have been living in this apartment for the last five years. However, from past few month, I have encountered difficulties with finding empty space to park my car in our apartment. Whenever I get back home from the office, I have to find free space for parking outside the building to park my car. It is unsafe and dangerous to park car on unfamiliar streets and frustrated to walk a long distance for it.

I will appreciated it if you could arrange formal meeting with all residences of our building and present proposal for adding unused space of the ground floor for making a parking more wider and spacious. Additionally, impose strict rules on outsiders and prevent them to park their vehicles in our building's parking or charge it if they will brake the rules. Please let me know about your in-person visit of our apartment, therefore, I can try to arrange my work schedule and be there with you.

I hope you consider my request and help me to overcome my difficulties related to parking soon. I look forward to your prompt response in this matter.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Twinkle

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the parking situation, explained the negative impact on your safety and convenience, and provided two logical suggestions for the landlord. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that all suggestions are fully integrated into the flow of the letter; for instance, the transition to your suggestions could be slightly smoother to ensure the reader follows your reasoning without effort.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem from the proposed solutions. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Additionally', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. For example, the sentence 'Please let me know about your in-person visit of our apartment, therefore, I can try to arrange my work schedule' is a bit clunky; using 'so that' would have created a more natural connection between the two clauses.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'unavailability', 'encountered difficulties', and 'prompt response'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'parking more wider' (should be 'making the parking area wider') and 'brake the rules' (should be 'break the rules'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common collocations. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated synonyms for 'problem' or 'difficulties' would further enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical slips throughout the text. For example, 'from past few month' should be 'over the past few months', and 'I will appreciated it' should be 'I would appreciate it'. Additionally, 'prevent them to park' is incorrect; the correct structure is 'prevent them from parking'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
