Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Simpson,
I am writing this letter to complain you about not getting enough space for parking in our parking lot even during weekends.
Regarding the problem, I always reach home at around 7:00 pm and that time whole parking area is full. Eventhough, during weekends as well after 5:00 pm, I am facing the same problem. Moreover, I tried to park my car on the roads but it is not safe during night hours.
It bothers me alot, as I am paying fifty bucks for just parking and it is not worth to pay. Aditionally, my visitors facing the same problem which is quite frustrating.
It would be great if you could allocate particular space for each residents with their unit number so people can find easily parking spot.
I hope you look into this matter and give some solution. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Pragati Nanera

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the parking situation, explaining why it is bothersome, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development of the 'why it bothers you' section could be slightly more detailed to reach a higher band. For instance, the impact on your daily routine or stress levels could be expanded. However, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader is left with a complete understanding of the issue and the requested action.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Regarding the problem,' 'Moreover,' and 'It would be great if,' which help connect your thoughts. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the use of cohesive devices could be more varied to improve the flow. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure supports the message effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'allocate,' 'frustrating,' and 'unit number.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'complain you' (should be 'complain to you') and 'fifty bucks' (which is too informal for a letter to a landlord; 'fifty dollars' or 'a monthly fee' would be better). The phrase 'it is not worth to pay' is also slightly unnatural. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'that time whole parking area is full' (missing 'the' and 'at'), 'Eventhough' (which is a conjunction, not an adverb, and should be 'Even though'), and 'my visitors facing' (missing the auxiliary verb 'are'). Additionally, 'each residents' should be 'each resident.' While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
