IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You live in a small apartment building with a parking lot in back, and you often cannot find an empty parking space when you get home from work.
Write a letter to your landlord. In your letter
• describe the situation.
• explain why it bothers you.
• suggest something the landlord could do to solve the problem. You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:Dear ____
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Landlord,
I am writing to bring your attention to the current issue of parking problem at our apartment.
As you may know, there is a small parking area behind the building but it is always clustered as no space is left to park the vehicle at noon. I often have to park somewhere else at longer distances from the building due to no space left in our designated parking space and I believe many of the residents are going through the same problem.
The situation is becoming extremely stressful and inconvenient to find a parking place after a long day at office. And particularly parking at road is not safe and I always have to worry about the safety of my vehicle.
I would therefore suggests to give designated place for each apartment to safely park without any difficulties and initiate new rules that only residents are allowed to park. Also, if possible, creating a few additional parking space would be preferable and more practical.
I would appreciate if you could look into this matter and take appropriate actions to resolve this issue as soon as possible.
Yours Sincerely,
Nirali Dhotre

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the parking situation, explaining the personal impact, and proposing solutions. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development could be slightly more sophisticated. For instance, the explanation of why it is stressful is clear, but could be expanded with more specific detail. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task effectively, maintaining a consistent focus throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding request. Each paragraph has a central focus, which helps the reader follow the argument. Cohesive devices such as 'As you may know', 'I would therefore suggest', and 'Also' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of ideas from the problem to the proposed solution is smooth and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'clustered' to describe a parking lot, which is not the most natural choice in this context. Phrases like 'at longer distances' and 'at road' are slightly awkward. However, the writer uses some functional vocabulary like 'designated parking space' and 'inconvenient' effectively. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on more precise collocations and a wider variety of descriptive language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I would therefore suggests' (should be 'suggest') and 'parking at road' (should be 'parking on the road'). Additionally, 'there is a small parking area... but it is always clustered' is slightly confusing. Despite these errors, the meaning is never in doubt, and the communication remains effective. The writer shows an ability to use complex sentences, though control over subject-verb agreement and preposition usage needs improvement.
