Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am reaching out to express my problem regarding the parking lot.

I am a resident in your building 'Muhallab'. My office timings are from morning till late night. The space for my car parking is provided in the back side of the building, but now I am facing a serious problem regarding the parking. When I come back from the office my parking space has already occupied, which is not fare. I know there are some guests which park their cars. I has to wait until they go and I park my car properly. It disturbs my sleep badly.

Please inform the residents to provide the appropriate space to their guests for parking. In addition, you can put some cones forbidding to park the cars in the parking area or place a notification on the entrance.

I hope you will consider my problem and take a prompt action to solve the concern.

Yours sincerely,

Sobia.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact on your daily life is explained, and suggestions for the landlord are provided. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention that your sleep is disturbed, explaining how this affects your work performance or daily routine would have provided more depth. The response is clear and the purpose of the letter is immediately apparent to the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear opening and closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'but now'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the paragraphing is slightly inconsistent. The transition between describing the problem and suggesting solutions could be smoother. While the overall progression is clear, the use of linking words is somewhat repetitive, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'not fare' (should be 'not fair') and 'my parking space has already occupied' (should be 'has already been occupied'). You use some functional vocabulary like 'prompt action' and 'forbidding', which is good. However, the vocabulary is generally quite simple and lacks the variety or precision needed for a higher score. Expanding your range to include more specific collocations related to housing or parking would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I has to wait' (should be 'I have to wait') and 'there are some guests which park' (should be 'who park'). Additionally, 'my parking space has already occupied' is a passive voice error. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and the reader can easily understand your point. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice constructions.
