Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear landlord,
I am writing express my concern about car parking space at the back of our apartment building, which I found always full and no spot available to park my car when I come home after work.
As I recently moved into this building and I am facing this problem since one week. This is extremely disappointing that after a busy working day, I have had to spend half an hour to find a spot for car parking, even the parking lot is large enough. I finish my job at 5:30 p.m. and it takes about 15 minutes to get home. However, due to this issue, I return home at around 6:15 to 6:30 p.m.
The biggest challenge that bothered me the most is paid parking. Several times I have had to park my vehicle in the paid parking zone, and I spent almost $75 since last week. Moreover, parking my car in the guest parking area is the option that left, and it is quite far from my building, so it becomes very inconvenient for me.
To deal with this challenge, I would like to suggest you to provide a token to every resident of the building with their car number and name, and allocate them the parking slots. I would be grateful if you could restrict guest entry to enter resident parking by strict guard policies. Please respond at your earliest convenience.
I hope you will consider my suggestions and take an appropriate action.
I await your prompt response.
Kind regards,
Param

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the parking situation, explain the negative impact (financial cost and inconvenience), and provide two logical suggestions for the landlord. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening sentence is grammatically complete, as 'I am writing express' is missing the infinitive marker 'to'. Overall, the task is fully accomplished.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'To deal with this challenge' to link your sentences and paragraphs. While the flow is generally good, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the letter follows a standard formal structure, which contributes to the clarity of the message.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'inconvenient', 'appropriate action', and 'earliest convenience'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'I am facing this problem since one week' (should be 'have been facing... for one week') and 'the option that left' (should be 'the only option left'). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is somewhat functional rather than sophisticated. Incorporating more precise collocations would enhance the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I am writing express' (missing 'to'), 'I am facing this problem since one week' (incorrect tense usage), and 'restrict guest entry to enter' (redundant phrasing). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on verb tense consistency and the correct use of infinitives and prepositions. Despite these slips, your meaning remains clear throughout the letter.
