Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear landlord,

Subject: regarding the issue of car parking.

I am renting your apartment in Toronto. I am writing to inform you that I am facing a problem to get a parking spot for my car. Whenever, I come back to my house from my work at night, I park my car on street due to no available spot in building parking. I already received number of parking tickets due to park my vehicle on road, which is increasing my expenses. In addition, parking my car by street is not a safe option and this triggers to mental stress.

I would like to request you that please talk to the building manager and ask them to provide me reserve car parking space, so I can park my car at right spot without getting any challenge.

I am looking forward towards your positive response.

Thank you so much,

Yours faithfully,

Sukhbir.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the parking situation, explaining the negative impact (tickets and stress), and suggesting a solution (contacting the building manager). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. While the points are covered, they could be expanded with more descriptive detail to fully meet the requirements of a higher band. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the reader is left in no doubt about the writer's intentions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. The use of cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'Whenever' helps to connect ideas. However, the paragraphing is somewhat limited; the entire body of the letter is contained within one paragraph. Splitting the description of the problem and the proposed solution into two distinct paragraphs would improve the overall structure and flow. Referencing is generally clear, though the transition between the problem and the request for action could be smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some minor collocation errors, such as 'park my car by street' instead of 'on the street' and 'getting any challenge' instead of 'facing any difficulties'. While the range is sufficient to communicate the situation, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band. Using more varied and precise vocabulary would elevate the quality of the writing significantly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I already received' (should be present perfect 'I have already received'), 'due to park' (should be 'due to parking'), and 'triggers to mental stress' (should be 'triggers mental stress'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. The writer demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but control over these is inconsistent. Improving the accuracy of verb tenses and prepositional phrases would lead to a higher score.
