Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Landlord,
Subject: Regarding the issue of car parking.
I am renting your apartment in Toronto. I am writing to inform you that I am facing a problem finding a parking spot for my car. Whenever I come back home from work at night, I have to park my car on the street because there is no available spot in the building’s parking lot. I have already received a number of parking tickets for parking my vehicle on the road, which is increasing my expenses. In addition, parking my car on the street is not a safe option, and this causes me mental stress.
I would like to request that you please talk to the building manager and ask them to provide me with a reserved parking space, so I can park my car in the right spot without facing any problems.
I am looking forward to your positive response.
Thank you very much.
Yours faithfully,
Sukhbir

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the situation is described clearly, the impact (tickets and stress) is explained, and a specific solution is proposed. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, you could expand on the consequences of the parking issue or provide more detail about the frequency of the problem. Despite this, the purpose of the letter is fully achieved, and the reader is left with a clear understanding of your request.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem from the proposed solution. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'so I can' are used effectively to link ideas. The progression of information is smooth and easy to follow. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases to create a more sophisticated flow between sentences, as the current structure is quite straightforward.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and conveys your meaning clearly. You use relevant terms such as 'parking lot', 'parking tickets', and 'reserved parking space'. While the vocabulary is accurate, it is somewhat functional and lacks a range of less common or more sophisticated lexical items. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or descriptive adjectives to enhance the tone of your writing. For example, instead of 'facing a problem', you could use 'encountering a recurring issue'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a good level of grammatical control. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Whenever I come back home... I have to park...' and 'I would like to request that you please talk to...'. There are no significant errors that impede communication, and punctuation is generally accurate. To aim for a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice or conditional sentences, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
