Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Landlord,
Subject: Regarding the issue of car parking.
I am renting your apartment in Toronto. I am writing to inform you that I am struggling with a problem of finding a parking spot for my car in routine. Whenever I come back home from work at night, I have to park my car on the street because there is no available spot in the building’s parking lot. I have already received a number of parking tickets for parking my vehicle on the road, which is boosting my expenses. In addition, parking my car on the street is a unsafe option, and this causes me mental stress.
As a solution, I would like to request you to talk to the building manager and ask them to provide me with a reserved parking space, so I can park my car in the right spot without facing any problems.
I am looking forward to your positive response.
Thank you very much.
Yours faithfully,
Sukhbir

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact is explained, and a solution is proposed. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, the suggestion to 'talk to the building manager' could be expanded by explaining why a reserved spot is a fair request or how it might be implemented. While the task is fully covered, the depth of the response is limited, which keeps it from reaching the highest band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the problem from the proposed solution. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'As a solution' are used effectively to guide the reader. The progression of ideas is clear, though the transition between the problem description and the impact could be slightly smoother. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, with clear and functional language. Phrases like 'struggling with a problem' and 'boosting my expenses' are understandable, though 'boosting' is slightly unnatural in this context. There is an attempt to use some specific vocabulary, but the range is somewhat limited. To improve, you should aim for more precise collocations and a wider variety of descriptive language to convey your frustration more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The letter demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are a few minor grammatical errors, such as 'an unsafe option' (should be 'a'), and 'in routine' (should be 'on a regular basis'). However, these errors do not impede communication. The sentence structures are generally accurate, and the punctuation is correct. To achieve a higher band, you should incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, with greater consistency.
