Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr Mehta,
There is a small issue of parking space at the back of house, which I am consistently facing since a couple of days. I would like to brief it to you as you are my landlord and maybe we can find a viable solution to it.
Since last few days when I reach at home after 10 at night, the parking space alloted to me is occupied by another car. Being unaware of the owner of that car, I am not able to reach out to him/her. Nonetheless, most of the times there are no other parking spaces available at night and, I have to pay and park my car in a public parking.
This has been a recurring issue and it gets frustrating because I am already paying monthly for the parking space and still not able to find an empty spot. Adding to it, it gets a major issue when there are no spaces in public parking and I have to park on the street.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could look into this matter urgently and make sure to have a spot available/reserved for me as per our agreement.
Yours sincerely,
Krupa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all bullet points specified in the prompt. You clearly describe the situation regarding the occupied parking spot, explain why it causes frustration due to extra costs and inconvenience, and suggest a practical solution for the landlord to reserve a spot for you. Your tone is appropriately formal and polite for a letter to a landlord. Ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the communication is immediately clear from the opening sentence. The response fully satisfies the task requirements, demonstrating a strong understanding of how to structure a semi-formal letter for General Training Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
Your letter is easy to follow, with a clear logical progression from introducing the problem to explaining its impact and finally offering a solution. You make good use of paragraphing to separate distinct ideas, such as describing the issue in the second paragraph and the emotional and financial impact in the third. Cohesive devices are used effectively, for example phrases like 'Nonetheless', 'This has been a recurring issue', and 'Adding to it'. However, referencing could occasionally be smoother, such as 'reach out to him/her', but overall the organisation meets the criteria for Band 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with clarity and precision. Phrases such as 'viable solution', 'recurring issue', and 'urgently' show a good attempt at using less common lexical items appropriate for a formal complaint. There are minor unnatural collocations or word choices, such as 'consistently facing' instead of 'experiencing consistently', and 'brief it to you' instead of 'bring it to your attention'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, your vocabulary is adequate to communicate your meaning without any hindrance to the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a healthy mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and relative clauses ('I would greatly appreciate it if you could...'). You demonstrate good control over grammar and punctuation for the most part. However, there are a few noticeable grammatical errors, notably 'which I am consistently facing since a couple of days' (should use 'for' instead of 'since' with a duration) and 'Since last few days' (needs 'Since the last few days' or 'Over the last few days'). These errors do not impede communication, placing your grammar securely in the Band 6 range.
