IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You live in a small apartment building with a parking lot in back, and you often cannot find an empty parking space when you get home from work.

Write a letter to your landlord. In your letter
• describe the situation.
• explain why it bothers you.
• suggest something the landlord could do to solve the problem.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ____

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Manpreet,

I hope you are doing great. I am going to write my concern regarding the parking lot, as it has been going on since the new tenants moved into our apartment recently. The reason is they are 5 members, and each has their own car

Also, they are young and are party-goers. They arrange parties every night and invite other people, bringing their own cars. This leaves no empty spot for me every night coming from work. This makes me park my car on the street. Owing to the winters, I got a ticket one time from the security checkers. This leads me to raise my concern.

It would be really appreciated if you could take action as soon as possible. Since it requires immediate cessation, like to have a written lease contract signed, including the signatures of the tenants and conditions not to use all the reserved parking spots.

I hope you will take this assertion into consideration and will resolve this issue in a quick way.

Thank you

Anu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully covered all three bullet points required by the task instructions. You described the situation clearly by explaining that new tenants with multiple cars have moved into the apartment building. You explained why it bothers you by detailing how their nightly parties leave no space for your car after work, forcing you to park on the street, which resulted in a parking ticket during winter. Finally, you suggested a concrete solution for the landlord, proposing a written lease contract with conditions regarding parking spot usage. Your tone is appropriate for a letter to a landlord, and all parts of the prompt are fully addressed. Band score: 8.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organisation. You begin with an appropriate salutation and statement of purpose, move smoothly into the body paragraphs detailing the problem and its impacts, and conclude with a call to action and a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'Owing to the winters', and 'Since it requires' are used reasonably well to connect your ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct thoughts, such as the description of the tenants' habits versus your proposed solution. While paragraph breaks could be slightly more polished, cohesion is well managed. Band score: 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with clarity and precision. Phrases such as 'party-goers', 'immediate cessation', and 'take this assertion into consideration' show an attempt to use less common items with some awareness of style. However, there are some minor awkward word choices and collocations, such as 'I am going to write my concern' (better expressed as 'I am writing to express my concern') and 'resolve this issue in a quick way' (where 'promptly' or 'swiftly' would be more natural). These vocabulary errors do not impede communication. Band score: 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You make use of a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as participial phrases ('leaving no empty spot for me') and causal clauses ('Owing to the winters, I got a ticket'). The majority of your sentences are grammatically sound and fully comprehensible. There are a few minor grammatical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'every night coming from work' (which would flow better as 'when I come home from work every night') and 'like to have a written lease contract' (missing the subject 'I' or auxiliary verb). Punctuation is generally fine, and these minor errors do not interfere with understanding. Band score: 7.0.
