Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to complain about the parking problem in our apartment building. There is a parking area at the back of the building, but I often cannot find an empty space when I come home from work.
This problem bothers me because I usually return home in the evening when most residents have already parked their cars. As a result, I have park my car far from the building. Sometimes I have to wait for a long time or look for space on another street. This is very inconvenient, especially when I am tired after work or carrying shopping bags.
I would like to suggest a few possible solutions. You could give each apartment a fixed parking space. Another option is to make parking permits for residents only and stop visitors from using the spaces for a long time.
I hope you will consider my suggestions and solve this problem soon.
Yours faithfully,
Ahmad.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The student covers all parts of the task fully and effectively. The letter successfully describes the parking situation in the apartment building mentioning the back parking area and the difficulty in finding a space after work. It explains clearly why this bothers the writer, specifically highlighting the inconvenience of returning late when residents have parked, having to walk far, and struggling when tired or carrying shopping bags. Finally, it provides two practical solutions: assigning fixed parking spaces or introducing resident-only permits and restricting visitors. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a landlord, and all bullet points are well-developed without any omissions. Therefore, this response meets all the requirements for a high band score under Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following standard correspondence conventions. Ideas are logically sequenced and flow smoothly from describing the problem to explaining its impact and offering solutions. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each main point housed in its own distinct paragraph. Cohesive devices are handled well, such as 'As a result', 'Sometimes', and 'Another option is', which help guide the reader through the text without any abrupt transitions or confusion. The referencing is clear throughout, contributing to a cohesive and easily readable piece of writing that meets the standards of upper-intermediate performance.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for this task type. Expressions such as 'inconvenient', 'residents', 'fixed parking space', and 'parking permits' are used accurately. There are attempts at less common vocabulary, and word choices are generally natural, though slightly more sophisticated or idiomatic phrasing could elevate the piece further. Spelling and word choice are accurate with no noticeable errors that impede communication. While it does not feature a wide array of highly uncommon lexical items, the vocabulary deployed is fully sufficient and precise enough to convey the intended message clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms. There is good control over basic structures and successful attempts at complex sentences, such as 'This problem bothers me because I usually return home in the evening when most residents have already parked their cars.' There is a minor grammatical slip in the second paragraph ('I have park my car'), where the modal verb 'have' is missing the infinitive marker 'to', but this is a rare mechanical error that does not impede communication. Punctuation and verb tenses are handled well overall, and the majority of sentences are grammatically accurate, reflecting a solid command of grammar for this level.
