Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr.Smith,
Greetings for the day! I am a resident of 531 Star Avenue, Mississauga, and I am writing this letter in order to bring to your attention an ongoing issue concerning the parking facilities in our apartment building.
At the onset, let me provide you with the brief details regarding the difficulties I face while parking my personal vehicle. As I usually arrive home between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m., the majority of parking spaces are occupied during that time, and I had to park my car in the street. Although I understand that parking spots can be unavailable during peak hours, the situation has become increasingly inconvenient.
Due to insufficient parking space, not only did i have to levae early for the office, but i also had to spend considerable time looking for available parking spot when i arrive home. The situation gets serious when I am carrying groceries or heavy stuff in severe weather conditions.
Lastly, I would appreciate if you could consider designated parking spaces for each appartment. Moreover, you could provide residents with parking permits and reserve a few spaces for visitors. I hope you will consider taking appropriate action to resolve this matter.
Your prompt attention to this matter is highly appreciated.
Yours sincerely, Date: 10-09-2026
David Smith

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the task well. The student clearly describes the situation of not finding parking spaces when returning home between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m., explains why it bothers them by mentioning inconvenience, stress when carrying heavy items, and adverse weather conditions, and suggests practical solutions such as designated parking spaces, permits, and visitor spots. The tone is appropriately formal for a letter to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and easy to follow, earning a solid band score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, body paragraphs addressing specific aspects of the prompt, and a formal closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the description, the impact, and the suggestions. Cohesive devices like 'Although I understand', 'not only did i have to', and 'Moreover' are used to connect ideas, though occasional referencing issues and minor mechanical flaws in cohesion prevent a higher band. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal complaint letter, using terms such as 'ongoing issue', 'parking facilities', 'increasingly inconvenient', and 'designated parking spaces'. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies and lowercase capitalization errors on pronouns ('i') and spelling mistakes ('levae' instead of 'leave'). Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary used is sufficient for precision and flexibility, allowing the message to be communicated clearly without causing strain for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and subordinate clauses such as 'Although I understand that parking spots can be unavailable during peak hours...'. There are some grammatical errors and punctuation slips, such as lowercase 'i', missing capitalization on 'appartment', and tense inconsistencies ('and I had to park' instead of 'have to park'). However, the majority of simple sentences are accurate, and the errors do not impede communication, placing the writing comfortably in the band 6 category.
