Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this letter finds you well, I write to inform you about the situation I faced since so many days. I am doing 9 to 5 job near West Edmonton mall, when I return to home, I always have to park far away from our building. The significate reason for that is having less parking spot for tenants.
Moreover, I am also doing part time job in the pizza store from 7pm to 2am. So, I always come in rush from my morning job and I have to leave as early as I can for my 2nd job. Meanwhile, this parking creates my situation more worse. Paying good amount of rent and having no parking for me is kind of unfair to me, I wish you would find better solution for me or specifically allocate parking spot for me.
I hope you will look into this matter and come up with good solution, I will wait for your prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Jay

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the situation is clearly described in the opening paragraph by stating that the tenant cannot find an empty parking space behind the building due to a lack of spots. Second, the impact is explained in the second paragraph, highlighting the stress caused by tight transitions between a 9-to-5 job and a part-time job, combined with unfair rental conditions. Finally, a concrete suggestion is made to find a better solution or specifically allocate a parking spot. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a landlord. Although some ideas could be extended further for a higher band, all parts of the task are well addressed. Therefore, a solid band 6.5 to 7.0 is achieved, and a score of 6.5 is awarded.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening, body, and sign-off. Paragraphing is utilised to separate the description of the problem from its personal impact and the proposed solution. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally mechanical or clumsy, such as the transition 'Meanwhile, this parking creates my situation more worse.' Referencing is generally clear, but some cohesive devices are used repetitively. Overall organisation is coherent, allowing the reader to follow the train of thought easily despite minor mechanical flaws in linking ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The candidate demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'significate reason' (though grammatically inaccurate) and 'specifically allocate'. There are several word-choice and collocation errors throughout the response, such as 'I am doing 9 to 5 job' instead of 'working a 9-to-5 job', 'come in rush' instead of 'hurry', and 'creates my situation more worse' instead of 'makes my situation worse'. However, these lexical slips do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear to the reader, aligning well with the band 6 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses like 'when I return to home, I always have to park far away'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, such as comma splices ('I hope this letter finds you well, I write to inform'), tense misuse ('I write' instead of 'I am writing', 'situation I faced since so many days' instead of 'have been facing for many days'), and missing articles ('having less parking spot'). While these errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher score, they rarely impede overall comprehension, justifying a band 6.0 rating.
