Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Uncle,
I Hope everyone is fine and you are doing well. I want to know about car parked in your driveway is a family’s person car or someone else car is parked there for specific time period.
Because whenever I arrive from work in the evening I did not get a vacant space to park my car. But, when I signed the tenants contract you give me the option of one car parking lot in a driveway. Since, everyone have their own car so street space is always full. Recently, I got ticket from by- law for illegal parking on the opposite side of the road.
You need to take a look at this matter as soon as possible. You own a another house at next street and I suggests that you should park your friend’s car in the garage of that home or in a driveway. Since, you told me the residence is empty no one is living there.
Your regards,
Samardeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student covers all parts of the task well. The letter begins by describing the parking situation ('whenever I arrive from work in the evening I did not get a vacant space'), explains why it bothers them by mentioning the parking contract and receiving a parking ticket ('Recently, I got ticket from by- law'), and suggests a solution ('you should park your friend’s car in the garage of that home'). The tone is appropriately semi-formal, although 'Dear Uncle' is slightly informal for a landlord unless they are genuinely family. All required bullet points are addressed clearly and supported with relevant details, meeting the requirements of a Band 6.5 to 7.0 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is generally coherent and follows a logical progression from describing the problem to explaining its impact and finally offering a solution. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct ideas, such as the initial description of the issue versus the proposed solution. However, cohesive devices are somewhat basic or occasionally mechanical ('Because', 'Since', 'Recently'), and referencing is not always entirely clear (for instance, the opening sentences regarding 'car parked in your driveway' are slightly confusing and disjointed). Despite these minor cohesion flaws, the overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow, aligning well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'tenants contract', 'vacant space', 'illegal parking', and 'residence'. However, there are noticeable word choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'family’s person car', 'get a vacant space' (instead of find or secure), and 'by- law' (bylaw). While these lexical inaccuracies and minor spelling/formatting issues occur, they do not impede communication, allowing the reader to fully understand the message. This performance fits comfortably within the Band 6.0 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using subordinating clauses introduced by 'when', 'because', and 'since'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, including tense and agreement issues ('car parked in your driveway is a family’s person car or someone else car is parked', 'I did not get' instead of do not get, 'everyone have' instead of everyone has, 'You own a another house') and missing articles ('got ticket'). Although these errors occur frequently throughout the text, they rarely impede overall comprehension. The control of grammar corresponds to a solid Band 5.5.
