Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Smith,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding parking lot.

I live in suite number- 203 Millwoods, and someone always park his car in my parking space. I am not able to find my parking when I come back from my work in the evening and face difficulties about it.

It bothers me a lot because it is paid parking and I have paid 150$ every month for it. Due to parking problem I park my car in the wrong area and it blocks the entrance as well as emergency access. Additionally, I have to spend extra time looking for my spot and it causes stress for me.

I would be appreciate if you could aware the rules about parking to the apartment residents and take strict action regarding this matter. You could apply penalty if somebody use other tenant's parking space. Also, it would be better if you could apply instructions regarding it in the parking area.

I hope you would take prompt action regarding this matter. I look forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Jagjit Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The candidate successfully covers all bullet points required in the task instructions. In the first and second paragraphs, the situation is clearly described, noting that someone constantly parks in her designated spot and that she lives in suite number- 203 Millwoods. The second and third paragraphs effectively explain why this bothers her, mentioning that she pays $150 per month for the space, has to park in unauthorised areas which blocks emergency access, and experiences additional stress and wasted time. Finally, the fourth paragraph provides clear and practical suggestions for the landlord, such as reminding residents of the parking rules, imposing penalties for violations, and putting up instructional signs in the parking area. The letter maintains an appropriate tone throughout, fully addressing all parts of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a clear overall progression and logical organisation. The response is broken down into appropriate paragraphs, starting with a polite opening, moving through the description, the reasons for concern, and the suggested solutions, before concluding appropriately. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Additionally', 'It bothers me a lot because', and 'Also', which help guide the reader through the letter. While referencing is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and sentence-to-sentence links could be smoother. Nevertheless, paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, maintaining clear logical sequencing throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common collocations and topic-specific terms such as 'express my concern', 'emergency access', 'prompt action', and 'strict action'. However, there are several word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'someone always park his car' (instead of 'parks'), 'paid parking' (instead of a reserved parking space), and 'apply instructions' (instead of 'display instructions' or 'put up signs'). Additionally, currency symbol placement is incorrect ('150$' instead of '$150'). Despite these lexical errors and minor spelling or phrasing slips, communication is never impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'When I come back from my work in the evening', 'It would be better if you could apply instructions'). However, there are notable grammatical errors throughout the response. For example, there is a tense and agreement error in 'someone always park' instead of 'parks', an awkward prepositional phrase in 'face difficulties about it' instead of 'face difficulties because of it', and an incorrect verb form in 'I would be appreciate' instead of 'I would appreciate'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but these persistent structural and grammatical errors indicate a band 6 level.
