Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Anita,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction regarding an issue with a parking spot. I live in one of your apartment buildings at Westgrove Place, although we do have a large designated area to park our vehicles. But every time I come home from work, I am unable to find a spot to park my car.

It is really annoying, especially when I am paying for a spot, still, I am unable to use it because someone has already occupied it before I come home. There are certain days when I come home with work-related stress, and this situation acts as fuel in the fire. I still remember the time it was raining a few days back, and I had to park far away and walked in the rain.

I am requesting you to assign numbers so that people will know that those numbered places are already taken or bought by other people. In this way, I believe this problem can be solved. Also, you can mentioned on the notice board on the way to enter the lot that unauthorized vehicles get towed as a result individuals would be afraifd of parking at a wrong spot.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope you will come out with a possible solution to this problem.

Yours sincerely,

Anamika

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly describe the parking situation in your apartment building by explaining that you are unable to find an empty parking space when returning home from work, despite paying for a designated area. Furthermore, you effectively explain why this bothers you, citing work-related stress and an unpleasant memory of walking in the rain. Finally, you offer practical and logical suggestions for the landlord to solve the problem, specifically proposing numbered parking spots and warning signs about towing. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a landlord, and all parts of the prompt are fully developed, earning a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear overarching progression from describing the problem to explaining its impact and finally offering solutions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each main point, reflecting the structure of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'although', 'especially when', 'In this way', and 'Also' are utilised effectively to connect ideas, though some transitions like 'still, I am unable' could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, and the letter opens and closes with appropriate salutations and sign-offs, creating a cohesive and easy-to-read text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary range is generally adequate and successful for this task. You use some good functional phrases such as 'express my dissatisfaction', 'work-related stress', and 'unauthorized vehicles'. However, there are a few minor lexical and spelling errors or awkward word choices, such as writing 'come home with work-related stress' instead of 'come home from', and misspelling 'afraifd' instead of 'afraid'. Additionally, phrasing like 'you can mentioned on the notice board' contains a grammatical slip affecting the verb form. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and appropriately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses effectively using words like 'although', 'when', and 'so that'. The majority of your sentences are clear and communicate your message without hindrance. However, there are some grammatical inaccuracies and awkward structures, such as 'someone has already occupied it before I come home' (tense consistency issues), 'acts as fuel in the fire' (slightly unnatural idiom), and 'you can mentioned on the notice board' (incorrect verb form after a modal). Punctuation is generally sound, but these occasional errors prevent the grammar score from reaching higher bands.
