Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir/ma
i am writing this letter to inform about the challenge of not finding a spot to park at the parking lot.
I do close late for work and i am almost always the last person to arrive at the compound everyday and by the time i get back from work tjhe whole parking space would already be occupied by the other neighbors and this will warrant me to park outside the compound. I am worried about the safety of my car because parking it outside can impose great harm to my car. My car can be stolen, it can also be vandalized. Each time i leave my car outside i do not sleep well. I am always worried about the situation because i know it's quite risky to park my car outside the compound .
I suggest that the parking garage should be expanded thereby creating more space to accommodate more cars. Also the swimming area can be converted to a parking lot because nobody uses the swimming pool as such .
your's faithfully
ogenna Muomandu.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student covers all bullet points of the task well. The situation is clearly described (lack of parking spaces when returning late from work), the impact is explained (worry about the car's safety, vandalism, and loss of sleep), and relevant solutions are suggested (expanding the garage or converting the unused swimming pool). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. Ideas are well-developed and easy to follow. Minor details in task coverage are handled effectively, though the greeting and sign-off contain slight format irregularities. Overall, the requirements of the prompt are successfully met, warranting a solid band score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter exhibits a logical overall arrangement. The progression moves smoothly from the problem to the effects, and finally to the proposed solutions. However, paragraphing is somewhat lacking, as the entire body of the letter is clumped into one very long paragraph instead of being broken down into distinct sections for each prompt requirement. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well (e.g., 'and by the time', 'Also'), but referencing and punctuation are sometimes faulty, such as lowercase 'i' used for the pronoun throughout and run-on sentence structures like '...occupied by the other neighbors and this will warrant me...'. These cohesion flaws keep the response at a Band 6.0 level.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday issues such as 'parking space', 'vandalized', and 'accommodate'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'do close late for work' instead of 'finish work late' and 'impose great harm to my car' instead of 'pose a risk to my car'. Additionally, spelling and capitalization errors occur frequently, including 'tjhe' instead of 'the' and failure to capitalize the pronoun 'I' or the name 'ogenna'. Because the lexical resource is minimally adequate and contains errors that occasionally draw attention, a band score of 6.0 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over clause structures with conjunctions like 'because' and 'when'. However, grammatical accuracy is hindered by frequent errors in punctuation, capitalization, and article use. Examples include 'inform about the challenge' (missing object), 'the whole parking space would already be occupied', and missing terminal punctuation in several sentences. The lack of capitalization for the personal pronoun 'I' throughout the text is a persistent mechanical error. While communication is not severely impeded, the frequency of these lower-level errors prevents the writing from achieving a higher band score.
