Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear landlord,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my concern about a parking lot issue, which I have been facing for the past few weeks.

As you know I live in the apartment number B2AX and I initially opted for this apartment building due to the fact that it has its own parking lot. Most of the time, when I reach home, I cannot find an empty parking space for my car and I end up wasting a lot of time to find place to park. Having to deal with issue after a hectic day is quite exhausting for me.

I have noticed that people who visit nearby superstore, often park their vehicles in this parking lot. Consequently, most of the apartment residents struggle to park their cars. To resolve this problem, I believe you should dispaly a sign indicating that first three rows are reserved for the people living in the apartment building and remaing slots can be used by the people visiting nearby areas.

I hope you will take my suggestion into consideration and help us resolve the problem as soon as possible.

I look forward to you positive response.

Kind regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points of the task effectively. You successfully describe the situation regarding the lack of parking spaces in your building's back lot, explain clearly why this bothers you by noting the wasted time and exhaustion after a hectic workday, and suggest a practical solution involving signs and designated parking rows. The tone is appropriately formal and polite for a letter to a landlord, maintaining a clear purpose throughout. All parts of the prompt are well-addressed with relevant and logical ideas, satisfying the requirements for a Band 7.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a clear logical organization and progression from the opening statement of concern to the description of the problem, the explanation of the impact, the proposed solution, and the closing remarks. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the description of the parking issue and the underlying cause involving the nearby superstore. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively (e.g., 'As you know', 'Consequently', 'To resolve this problem'), although occasional minor mechanical phrasing occurs, such as 'deal with issue'. Overall, cohesion is well-managed and ideas flow smoothly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, utilizing phrases like 'express my concern', 'hectic day', and 'take my suggestion into consideration'. There are a few minor spelling and lexical slips, such as 'dispaly' instead of display and 'remaing' instead of remaining, as well as minor missing articles ('find place to park' instead of 'a place to park', 'deal with issue' instead of 'this issue'). However, the vocabulary is adequate to convey your message clearly and accurately without impeding communication, fitting the Band 6.5 descriptor well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and adverbial clauses ('due to the fact that it has its own parking lot' and 'when I reach home, I cannot find an empty parking space'). While there are a few isolated grammatical errors—such as missing articles and the spelling errors noted in lexical resource—the majority of sentences are clear and error-free. Punctuation is generally well-handled, and the grammatical control is solid throughout the letter, supporting a score of 7.0.
